Putování v nehybnosti | Jan Skalský

1 July - 31 August 2025
Bio Central Café

Jan Skalský was born in 2004 and comes from Náchod, where he graduated from the secondary school of civil engineering. He mainly reflects his inner processes through painting. His paintings are emotionally charged and by their abstract nature present the chaotic inner life of the artist, a hopeless search for meaning in an opaque world that defies reason and understanding.
Jan Skalský is not a conceptual author. His works are a kind of a projection screen of anxieties and sorrows experienced, forming together an aggressive and difficult to grasp mixture of feelings, sensations and diverse experiences. The fundamental themes of the work are time, the loss of illusions connected with the contradiction between the idealistic idea of an unrestrained artistic life and the necessity to fit into the stereotypical functioning of society.
Rather than a specific moment, the paintings capture a long-lasting sense of alienation and confusion intersecting past and present, colliding within a frame in the artist's world full of inner demons and existential dilemmas. In the artist's conception, artistic creation is a form of therapy and an escape from the destructive force of the past.
By the intimate nature of his painting, he copes with and makes sense of the dark influences of consciousness that become the inspiration for the creative act, thus partly losing its melancholic essence.

Jan Skalský does not present his peculiar poetics only on the space of the canvas and inside the frame. Since 2022, he has been actively involved in the creation of clothing, especially caps, which bear a striking resemblance to his paintings in their gloomy aesthetic.

Currently, in addition to painting and creating clothing, he also enjoys djing, a hobby stemming from a long-standing fascination with experimental electronic music in particular.

The title of the exhibition - WANDERING IN IMMOBILITY - refers to the state of mind and the desire for complete freedom from the past and the future and absolute penetration into the present moment - into a single temporal plane offering the possibility of maximum freedom and carefree.
